Progressive vs. Bifocal Lenses: What's the Difference?

If you need correction for more than one field of vision — reading and distance, for example — you've likely come across two options: bifocals and progressive lenses. Both correct multiple prescriptions in a single lens, but they work quite differently.

Bifocal lenses

Bifocals have two distinct zones: a larger area for distance vision and a smaller segment, usually at the bottom of the lens, for near vision like reading. You can typically see the line separating the two zones.

Pros:

  • Often less expensive than progressives
  • Wide, clearly defined reading zone
  • Easier adjustment period for some wearers

Cons:

  • Visible line across the lens
  • Only two prescriptions — no correction for mid-range vision like computer screens
  • Abrupt "jump" in image when your eye crosses the line

Progressive lenses

Progressive lenses blend near, mid-range, and distance prescriptions into one lens with no visible line — the correction changes gradually as your eye moves down the lens.

Pros:

  • No visible line — looks like a standard single-vision lens
  • Smooth transition between distance, computer, and reading vision
  • Covers the full range of vision, not just two zones

Cons:

  • Narrower zones require some adjustment to find the "sweet spot"
  • Slightly more expensive than bifocals
  • Adjustment period of one to two weeks is common for new wearers

Which one is right for you?

If you spend a lot of time on a computer, in addition to reading and driving, progressives usually offer a more natural, comfortable experience since they correct for that mid-range distance too. If budget is the main concern, or you've worn bifocals comfortably for years, sticking with bifocals is a perfectly reasonable choice.

Our licensed opticians will walk you through both options based on your prescription, lifestyle, and budget. We offer digital progressive lenses starting at $189.
